I love the term "giving him the business". I can't remember the last time I watched a football game with my grandfather that he couldn't find a suitable play to invoke the phrase. As I was checking out Lance Zierlein's blog the other day, I came upon two videos of referees using the phrase, and those are perhaps two of the finest moments in the history of referees and football.
The first clip is from a Jets/Bills game in 1986 where QB Jim Kelly did something to piss off Marty Lyons and subsequently he received the business.
In the NC State/Maryland game last weekend, ACC official Ron Cherry decided it was time to dust off that golden oldie of officiating.
This is fantastic material. Jeez, I need to find a way to work that phrase into normal conversation.
