Week 9: Six Big Games to Watch

Posted at October 26, 2007 09:09 PM in College Football .

Six games this weekend feature a matchup of highly ranked BCS teams. Rather than pick one or two to analyze in-depth, I've decided to do a quick overview of each game. Unfortunately I won't be able to see four of the six games: two due to regional ABC coverage and two because we don't get Fox Sports Net in our Dish Network package. So that leaves me with Florida-Georgia and Ohio State-Penn State. Those are quality games to be sure, but I can't help feeling that I'll be missing out on some great football.

The Teams: The #7 West Virginia Mountaineers (6-1) visit Rutgers Stadium to play the #27 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-2)
When: Saturday 10/27/07 at 11:00 AM Central
Television: Check the Regional Coverage Map
Point Spread: West Virginia by 6
Computer Says: West Virginia wins by 7
My Prediction: Rutgers wins 31-28
Why I'm Right: These teams both have excellent running games. Rutgers has talented RB Ray Rice and they lean toward a power running attack. West Virginia has QB Pat White and RB Steve Slaton and utilize quickness and speed to attack the edges. Rutgers QB Mike Teel has thrown for a lot of yards in big chunks, but Teel is nursing a bruise on his throwing hand. Both teams have played well on defense. This one should be close, so I'll go with the home team in an upset.

The Teams: The #12 USC Trojans (6-1) visit Autzen Stadium to play the #5 Oregon Ducks (6-1)
When: Saturday 10/27/07 at 2:00 PM Central
Television:
Point Spread: Oregon by 3
Computer Says: Oregon wins by 14
My Prediction: Oregon wins 28-24
Why I'm Right: For all of their offensive struggles the USC defense has remained excellent. The Oregon defense, not so much. The Oregon offense, led by QB Dennis Dixon and RB Jonathan Stewart, is explosive. The USC offense, not as much, more like inconsistent. The ability of Ducks QB Dennis Dixon to scramble should open up the stout run defense of USC and allow them to move the ball well enough to win.

VS

The Teams: The #11 Florida Gators (5-2) visit Alltel Stadium to play the #18 Georgia Bulldogs (5-2) at "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party"
When: Saturday 10/27/07 at 2:30 PM Central
Television:
Point Spread: Florida by 9
Computer Says: Florida wins by 13
My Prediction: Florida wins 31-17
Why I'm Right: Florida could be sluggish as they come off three very physical games, but Urban Meyer won't let them ease up when the SEC East is theirs to lose. QB Tim Tebow has been amazing, but he appeared to be nursing a sore shoulder by the end of the Kentucky game last week. Provided that doesn't become an issue, Florida will roll. With RB Thomas Brown out with a collarbone injury, RB Knowshon Moreno will shoulder the load of an offense that must stay balanced to be successful. QB Matthew Stafford has put up decent numbers, but he hasn't been very efficient in doing so. The Florida secondary has holes so shuld Stafford show up it will be a much closer game than my prediction suggests. Still, Florida should cruise.

The Teams: The #10 South Florida Bulls (6-1) visit Rentschler Field to play the #23 Connecticut Huskies (6-1)
When: Saturday 10/27/07 at 2:30 PM Central
Television: Check the Regional Coverage Map
Point Spread: South Florida by 4
Computer Says: Connecticut wins by 2
My Prediction: South Florida wins 28-17
Why I'm Right: These two teams might have the same record, but their paths to those records differ greatly. South Florida is battle tested with a win at Auburn, a win at home over West Virginia, and a tough road loss to Rutgers last week. Their team is fast and aggressive on defense and the offense is led by young play-making QB Matt Grothe. UConn has achieved their record by beating a bunch of bad teams, narrowly losing to a good Virginia team, and getting over on a botched fair catch call to beat a bad Louisville team. The Huskies do have an underrated defensive unit, but given the competition it's hard to tell by how much they're underrated. It's good that UConn became bowl eligible last week because they stand a real chance of losing four of their last five games.

AT

The Teams: The #1 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-0) visit Beaver Stadium to play the #25 Penn State Nittany Lions (6-2)
When: Saturday 10/27/07 at 7:00 PM Central
Television:
Point Spread: Ohio State by 4
Computer Says: Ohio State wins by 2
My Prediction: Ohio State wins 17-13
Why I'm Right: Ohio State hasn't played a team as good as Penn State yet this season. What the Buckeyes have done is shutdown some pretty good offensive units from otherwise mediocre teams. Ohio State will force Penn State QB Anthony Morelli to beat them through the air and I just don't think Morelli has it in him. This should be an ugly, low-scoring defensive battle and Ohio State will pull off the tough road win; however, I would love to see them lose.

AT

The Teams: The #21 California Golden Bears (5-2) visit Sun Devil Stadium to play the #4 Arizona State Sun Devils (7-0)
When: Saturday 10/27/07 at 9:00 PM Central
Television:
Point Spread: Arizona State by 3
Computer Says: Arizona State wins by 12
My Prediction: Cal wins 35-28
Why I'm Right: Cal has lost two in a row while QB Nate Longshore battled a sprained ankle. Losing a third consecutive game would be a crushing blow for a team once discussed among national title contenders. With stud WR DeSean Jackson and RB Justin Forsett, Cal will put points on the board against what appears to be a pretty good Arizona State defense. The Sun Devils have a solid QB in Rudy Carpenter, but they just lost RB Ryan Torain to a season ending injury. It won't be easy, but Cal should beat a team that has been beating up on slugs all year.
