First priority of the summer was to grab this thing early on its release date. The 35 minute drive back from Best Buy was the perfect length for a complete spin of the record. Since then it's been in constant rotation and has dethroned The Hold Steady's Boys and Girls in America as king of my iPod.
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is the best Spoon album since Girls Can Tell. I go back and forth on which Spoon album is the best in their catalog, but usually Girls Can Tell edges out A Series of Sneaks for that prestigious distinction. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga isn't at that point after a few days, and likely never will reach those lofty heights, but it's not far behind, and it feels like the perfect blend of Girls Can Tell's pop, Kill the Moonlight's minimalist experimentation and Gimme Fiction's moody, theatrical grooves.
The obvious standout track is The Underdog, but Don't Make Me a Target, You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb, and Black Like Me are all single worthy tunes with nothing that I'd consider filler material in between.
To finish this little entry off, here are my top five favorite Spoon songs, in alphabetical order.
1. Anything You Want
2. Chips and Dip
3. No You're Not
4. The Fitted Shirt
5. The Underdog
And for what it's worth, I think Anything You Want is absolutely the perfect pop tune, flawless.
I'm a fan of the new album too. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I think I prefer Girls Can Tell the most, but Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is solid. The Underdog is a well crafted tune. The album is a good addition to their already solid catalog.
