Stick a fork in the Horns

Posted at September 12, 2006 10:38 AM in College Football .

The first half was competitive, but beginning with Ginn's touchdown at the end of the second quarter, things got ugly. The Horns are effectively out of national title contention at this point. I think we probably will end up with one undefeated team and a shitload of one loss teams, but the Horns will likely drop another one, maybe not to OU, but they'll stumble again before it's over, so they're done. This will be a rebuilding year (not in the Baylor sense of rebuilding from the ground up, but relative to past Texas teams).

The national picture didn't change much, but Ohio State has clearly become the favorite and one of the few teams to have already passed a difficult test. The upcoming weekend is full of huge games (it could be the best weekend of college football that I can remember outside of New Year's Day bowl games) and will do a lot to separate the pretenders from the legit contenders.

My new Top 25 poll:

My Rank Last Rank Team Record Quick Thoughts
1 4 2-0 The offense looked great against UT. They did have trouble rushing and defending the rush, but clearly this is an elite team with a Heisman level QB in Troy Smith; he could VY them to the title.
2 2 1-0 Had the week off, they host Nebraska in a huge game this weekend.
3 3 2-0 Dominated Mississippi St 34-0, they will host LSU to settle the SEC West.
4 5 2-0 Absolutely destroyed an improved Arizona team. Going into Auburn for a national title elimination game.
5 6 2-0 Beat Temple last week, they'll finally get a challenge when they host Miami.
6 7 2-0 They play Maryland on Thursday night; it's their toughest non-conference test on that pathetic Big East schedule.
7 12 2-0 Either Penn St has been vastly overrated or the Irish are a lot better than I thought. I think I'm starting to believe it's the latter; a win over Michigan this week and I'll be convinced that this team is legit.
8 1 1-1 Lost 7-24 to Ohio State, it's not over but they have a lot of work to do. Rice is a get a well game this weekend.
9 10 2-0 On the road at Tennessee in a big SEC East showdown.
10 8 2-0 Beat a shitty Washington team 37-20. They'll get a huge test test at Oregon this weekend.
11 11 2-0 35-10 win at North Carolina, Duke will not offer much resistance.
12 9 2-0 Struggled against Troy in a 24-17 win. They host a very good Clemson team coming off a 33-34 lost against Boston College.
13 13 1-1 On the road at Louisville.
14 14 2-0 Crushed Central Michigan, but they have to go to Notre Dame this weekend.
15 15 2-0 Shutout a pretty good South Carolina team 18-0, they get UAB this weekend.
16 17 2-0 Nicholls State didn't offer much resistance, but USC ought to this weekend.
17 18 2-0 Survived a strong challenge by Air Force to get the win 31-30. Florida is visiting this weekend.
18 19 2-0 As predicted, the game at UTEP was a shootout. The Red Raiders won 38-35 in OT. They play at TCU this weekend in what should be a very good game.
19 20 1-1 Killed Minnesota 42-17. Portland State is a breather.
20 21 2-0 Minus QB Drew Tate, they survived a scare from terrible Syracuse thanks to brutal playcalling on the last Orange offensive series in OT. They host Iowa State in an in state rivalry game that they've sucked in recently.
21 23 2-0 Beat Nevada 52-17. They play at an absolutely awful Colorado team.
22 NR 2-0 Beat Clemson 34-33. They host BYU.
23 16 1-1 Lost at Boston College 33-34. They don't have time to regroup because they travel to Florida State; I think they will beat the Seminoles.
24 24 2-0 Beat Western Illinois, they host San Diego State.
25 25 2-0 Their game against Texas Tech will determine if this team is for real. They beat up on UC Davis 46-13 last week.

Comments

That LSU-Auburn game was crazy. They were giving a lot of credit JeMarcus Russell to driving the team down the field, but he didn't look as good as they were saying. He made a lot of mistakes including not throwing it in the endzone on the final play.

As I type this, Selvin Young fumbles on the goal line. Why do we keep playing him again?
