The Olympic Rings

Posted at April 18, 2006 12:30 AM in Sports .

Congratulations are in order for Houston Astros outfielder Preston Wilson. Earlier tonight he did something that no Houston Astros player has ever done before in the 44 year underachieving history of the franchise: 5 strikeouts in a single game.

That's right, Wilson started with the Hat Trick but pressed his luck. He wore the Golden Sombrero proudly, but briefly. Fate decided The Olympic Rings were the best fit for the Astros newest slugger. Even more impressive, he set the record in only his 12th game with the team.

In light of the state-wide rolling blackouts today, I encourage Wilson to recapture the magic of his 2000 campaign that saw him lead the majors with 187 strikeouts. If only science can find a way to harness the power of our exciting new four million dollar windmill.

The Box Score

UPDATE on 4/20/06:
Preston Wilson brought his A game to the Milwaukee series. He earned the Olympic Rings (also called the platinum sombrero) in the first game, he added two more K's in the second game, and then finished strong with the golden sombrero in the third game. 2-14 with 11 strikeouts is a nice effort. It's really too bad he didn't whiff one more time in the middle game; I have a hunch the windmill cycle has never been achieved in a three game series.
