Lethargic

Posted at November 15, 2004 11:38 PM in General .

Maybe the cause is the shorter days or the more frequently gray, dull skies, but I just haven't been able to muster the energy needed to post a new entry. In a rare moment of inspiration coupled with motivation, I now present to you a few unrelated thoughts from the first half of the month.

Despite my lack of published activity, I'm still following the college football season very closely. The process of writing my "This Week in College Football" entries has become too tedious to continue for now. I may return to it at some point (probably the A&M at UT game). Here is my top 5 for the Heisman trophy:

  1. RB Cedric Benson, Texas
  2. QB Alex Smith, Utah
  3. QB Jason Campbell, Auburn
  4. QB Jason White, Oklahoma
  5. RB Reggie Bush, USC

This list is subject to change (like if the Aggies can beat the Horns it will be difficult to exclude Reggie McNeal). In early December I will post my final top 5, including my justification for each guy.

It sounds like Condoleezza Rice will become the next Secretary of State. I like her. When the WNBA started looking for a new commissioner Rice's name was floating around. Rather than committing career suicide and taking the reins (pun intended) of a terrible league Rice has been promoted to one of the most prominent cabinet positions (not sure that she is right for SecState though). Final thought on politics: The McLaughlin Group is highly entertaining.

My "City of Heroes" entry is a magnet for spam. I need to find time (ha) to upgrade Movable Type so that I can delete those pesky ads. I refuse to require a security code to post comments. I get very few legitimate comments as it is so I can't afford to lose any potential comments by imposing a more strenuous posting process.

Inspired by a very well written and entertaining book about the Culinary Institute of America, I will post one of my favorite recipes in the next couple of days. Given to me by Parker last weekend (thanks), the book is called The Making of a Chef by Michael Ruhlman and I will provide a review of it in the near future. The recipe that I will post will either be Spinach Madeleine (a very old Morgan family recipe and the only form of spinach that I would ever consider eating) or Chicken Kiev (one of my all time favorite chicken dishes)...If you want to see one more than the other, make a request in the comments section.

My spectacular comeback entry had an early review of The Good Life's Album of the Year. I'm still amazed by the album and it remains near the top of my playlist. For almost all of the 11 real songs on the 12 track album I could make a strong case that it is the best song on the record. The November song, "Lovers Need Lawyers", which probably is the most Cursive sounding of all the songs, has become one of my favorites. The song is pretty much the climax for tension in the relationship before the dissolution in the amazing "Inmates" (everyone should give both songs a listen).

"Lovers Need Lawyers" written by Tim Kasher

I swear to speak the whole truth, nothing but the truth – oh, so help me God, I wasn’t cheating on you. Yeah I’ve got a spotty record, but I’ve been renewed. If you can’t believe me – then what’s to believe? Once you lose the trust you lose sincerity. I’m sick and tired of acting sincere to your accusing eyes and ears.

Oh, lovers need lawyers; all that I’m screaming’s being held against me. well, You’re judge and jury, so hang me or take me for all I am worth – better or worse.

Yeah, I was drinking. Yeah, she was drinking too, and, yeah, we made a connection – we came from the same neighborhood. But, surely you can’t charge me for that, that’s merely fact –merely coincidence. So, there we were, outlasting last call. We took a cab to Iowa for more alcohol.

Yeah, we crossed the river alone; I also went home alone.

Oh lovers need lawyers. We’re talking in circles, but missing the meaning of why we’re fighting: you just want to make the best me that you can. All I am – take me for all I am worth. Take me for all I am.

I could never take another’s hand… it’s to you I’m condemned.

Sure the song is very emo, but admit it: that's one hell of a well written tune. As anyone who finished reading this entry can see, I will be departing from my heavy load of college football talk to a more diverse blog. Stay tuned.

I'd guess that you'll probably rethink this logic once the spam starts coming in the hundreds instead of singles. And it will. There's always MT-Blacklist, if you don't like the test for human intelligence.
